The kidney and Ureters in Situ

The kidneys rest against the body wall in the lower thoracic and upper lumbar region of the vertebral column (A). Note that the ureter passes deep to the gonadal vessels en route to the bladder. Through compact, efficient, and pyramidal nephron communities (B), they rapidly filter the blood supply provided by and drained into the large renal vessels.
